After the conclusion of the qualifiers and playoffs, the revamped Champions League begins in earnest with the first league-phase fixtures of the campaign. The competition now consists of a single 36-team league, with all teams playing eight matches against eight different clubs to determine who reaches the knockout phase.

Huge excitement surrounds Villa’s first Champions League match at 17:45 BST against Young Boys. Villa last played in the European Cup 41 years ago, having won the competition the season before.

The other English involvement sees Liverpool face AC Milan at 20:00 BST. The match marks the Reds' Champions League return after a season out of Europe’s premier competition.

Pep Guardiola will provide the latest from Man City's camp as they prepare to face Inter Milan at home in the Champions League.

On the domestic front the EFL Cup resumes at the third round stage. Manchester United host League One side Barnsley at 20:00 BST, while Everton welcome Southampton at 19:45 BST. Fulham, Brentford and Crystal Palace are also in action.

Villa welcome Wolves in a west midlands derby that is one of six 15:00 BST fixtures including Liverpool at home to AFC Bournemouth where the Reds could move top of the table - albeit briefly, before Sunday’s top-two showdown - if they win by a convincing margin. Leicester City face Everton and Southampton host Ipswich Town, with all four clubs seeking their first league win of the season.

The day’s late kick-off sees Palace welcome Man United to Selhurst Park at 17:30 BST. The Eagles are still without a win, while United are looking to build on their 3-0 win at Southampton last weekend.

Sunday

Aside from the top three clubs going into the weekend, Brighton and Nott'm Forest are the only other unbeaten sides in the Premier League so far this season. They meet at the Amex Stadium at 14:00 BST, with both looking to maintain their unbeaten start.

The weekend concludes at 16:30 BST with the biggest match of the campaign so far, when Man City host Arsenal in a contest that could have a major impact on the title race, even at this early stage.

Only two points separated the two teams in the final standings last season, and they have both continued to make the running in the opening weeks of the 2024/25 campaign. Arsenal, however, have not triumphed at the Etihad Stadium for almost a decade.
